La Fiera di San Nicolo
A very special Christmas market is the St. Nicholas market between Via Muratti and Viale XX Settembre. This event is opening its doors at the beginning of December, and already for more than 100 years. It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the protector of children, who is celebrated on December 6. In Trieste, he is more important and more “generous” than Santa Claus!
Christmas markets
After the St. Nicholas Market, the actual Christmas markets begin, which take place until Epiphany in the squares in the city center, from Piazza Sant'Antonio to Piazza della Borsa. The event is inspired by the Christmas market tradition in Central and Northern Europe and the rustic booths offer local handicrafts, gift ideas, regional gastronomic products and wine specialties from the Julian Venetia area: a perfect opportunity to combine the search for Christmas gifts with a winter getaway to Trieste in northern Italy.
